Gifted and Talented

There are many opportunities at Avoca Beach Primary School for Gifted and Talented students.

At Avoca Beach Primary School the teachers differentiate the curriculum so the needs of all children are met. Grouping of students within classes and stages enables the more capable students to receive enrichment and, when appropriate, extension.

Enrichment groups in Maths, English and Technology will be introduced in 2007 across all Stages. Students with talents in particular areas also have the opportunity to be involved in the many extra curricular activities offered at the school.

Each year, students in Year 6 from Avoca Beach Primary School participate in the Central Coast Camp for Gifted and Talented Students.  Additionally, two Year 5 students are selected each year to attend the annual NSW Mathematics Camp.

The activities of the NSW Association for Gifted and Talented Children are promoted via the school newsletter.  Additional information regarding this association is available on www.nswagtc.org.au.

Learning Difficulties

Avoca Beach Primary School has a part-time STLA (Support Teacher Learning Assistance) who is allocated time each week with children who have been identified by their classroom teacher as having difficulty in either literacy or numeracy.

The STLA works with small groups of children, catering for their particular needs. Individual programs are established by the STLA and are conducted by a teacher's aide or trained volunteers.

The school also has a "Read Every Day" program which helps to improve children's accuracy and fluency. This program runs four days per week and targets children between Years 3 to 6. We rely heavily on parent helpers to assist with this program and new volunteers are always appreciated.
