SCHOOL HISTORY

The New School

At the commencement of the 1975 school year, the cement footings of the new brick school were poured. The old timber school was temporarily moved to the south of the new building. Classes were taught as normal but outside it was chaos. Without pathways, paved areas and the small grass area becoming bare it became a mess. After rain there was mud everywhere which often resulted in children being sent home, as it was almost impossible to avoid. Clearing a way through the playground for cement trucks and builders, was a frequent chore for the school staff. As there was very little room for play, the school had to devise many activities for the children. Basketball hoops were put on trees, sandpits were built, and log playground structures went up and not out. The new school was built quite quickly and in November 1975 the students were ready to move in.

Imagine 200 students lining up with their teachers and going to their new room. It was a very exciting time as they were finally allowed to go into the "out of bounds area". Numerous trips were made with the children and teachers carrying items from the old school to the new. There were major decisions to be made about where things should be stored and getting used to the change of needing just a few keys to lots of keys that needed to be tagged. There were the usual breakages and some things were difficult to find again at short notice - just like moving house! The new building marked a new chapter in the on going development of Avoca Beach PS. It is truly located in a beautiful area and a wonderful place to learn.

EVER TO THE BEST
A Poem by Lisa Smith (Year 6 1985)

Green and grassy
Glistening dew drops on the grassy fields
Boundaries made by standing trees
Filled with birds singing daily
Kookaburras singing while children play
Gaily appearing in red, white and grey.
Computer knowledge creeping in
Making learning really in
Teachers nice and really caring
Helping and preparing us for further learning
Through the years.
